Working for your Phone

Another great quote from Woz regarding Android. This quote comes from the same article as before, by the same moron:

if you’re willing to do the work to understand it a little bit, well I hate to say it, but there’s more available in some ways

Woz is 100% correct here, Android, specifically ICS, is a better more flexible and stronger platform than iOS, if you are willing to do the work.  That last bit is by far the biggest asterisk to my agreement with Woz.

As it stands there are two major platforms, Android and iOS.

iOS is by far the best out of the box experience and is by far the best option for the typical consumer.

Android, which is a bit more unpredictable out of the box is the best option for the enthusiast.

The enthusiast doesn’t mind having to yank a battery occasionally, or learn the intricacies of Root, Unlocked bootloaders or flashing a new rom.  Your typical consumer has no interest in learning these terms, or understanding their concepts.  They want a phone that plays some Angry Birds, connects to Facebook and lets them call their friends.

While both enthusiast and consumer focused devices have their place in the market, its hard to see mind share really delving too far away from the simple and thoughtful experiences.
